creativity and the spritual path

islamic art and creative event

Leila Adam is a Mathematics teacher from Wellington, New Zealand. She is interested in the intricate forms of Islamic geometric art and has exhibited nature-inspired geometric watercolour paintings. She has recently published a book featuring classic Islamic designs for use in tiling floors and walls (Tile Designs).

1. What is the link between your spirituality and your creativity?
I want to explore the depths of Islamic geometrical forms, to find a valid artistic expression for the glorification of Allah SWT. Through geometry I also hope to convey to others the disciplined organisation of an Islamic life and the flowering of beauty it creates.

2. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I am inspired by the Muslim artisans of old and would like to see a revival of the art of beautification using Islamic geometric patterns.

3. What will you be hoping to take away from the CSP event? I am hoping to be inspired by what others are doing in the Islamic visual arts field, and to connect with people who have similar aims. I would be excited by the prospect of collaborating with other artists on future projects or events.
